Arrester| lightning protection Arrest
Arrester is used to protect electronic equipment against lightning, induced transient flows used and
has high efficiency and effectiveness. Arrester protects electrical and electronic equipment during
lightning voltage or current DC and has a high discharge capacity and is also suitable for IV.
Protection from electric shocks:
Electric shocks are often caused by lightning. These induced voltages cause disturbances in various networks. The amount of this voltage is several kilovolts in a few microseconds. These disturbances may cause incorrect operation of the device or the complete failure of sensitive systems. Electric shocks are caused by indirect effects of lightning, which are factors affecting electrical and telecommunication systems. Surge arresters can prevent sudden shocks and sudden and reverse voltages from lightning rods and protect electrical appliances.
One of the most important and best protections is to use SPD or TVSS to prevent electrical shocks (voltage surges) which controls and limits the voltage to a tolerable level for usable systems
Features of a good surge arrester:
Capability of discharging excess voltage returned from lightning
Preventing and causing disruption to user systems
Has a contact system to inform about failures
Has an LCD display
The ability to separate the magazine from the base
What is a lightning arrester and how does it work?
A lightning arrester is a device that is used in high-power systems of 1000 V to protect against lightning and switching surges. A surge arrester is used to protect electrical equipment against excessive voltage caused by external factors such as (lightning) or internal current changes.
The surge arrester connects the conductor in the electronic equipment to the ground and thus transfers the excess current to the ground and transfers the normal voltage to the conductor.
The reason for the proper performance of the surge arrester in transferring the excess voltage is that it is made of the Metal Oxide Varistor or MOV in its structure. MOV is a semiconductor that is very sensitive to high voltage.
At normal voltages, the MOV acts as an insulator and current does not pass through it, but at high voltages it acts like a conductor. In fact, the varistor acts like an open switch at normal voltage and a closed switch at high voltage.
Guidance on selecting the type of arrester
It is better to choose a surge arrester that has the lowest rating so that it can provide proper protection against shock to the equipment and increase their life when connected to the management system.
The selected arrester with the lowest rating provides the greatest protection range for isolation.
While the highest-grade arrester, although it shows the greatest ability of the arrester to save the power device, it reduces the protection range for shocks.
The selection of arresters varies based on the voltage level of the arrester, the class of the arrester, and the location of the arrester.
1- Voltage level of the arrester: The selection of this type depends on whether the device is connected to the ground or not. If so, the methods of connecting the device to the ground should be considered.
2- Arrester class: Arresters are generally divided into three categories (classes).
In addition to protection and safety, they are divided into three categories:
1- Tube station group arresters
2- Intermediate or secondary group arresters
3- Distribution arresters
Tube station group arresters perform the best and most protection ability and are the most expensive type.
How the surge arrester works:
Lightning and electrical explosion
When a strong force or lightning strikes an electrical system, it damages the entire system and every electrical device connected to the system. Electrical devices operate within a specific voltage range. When these devices receive a voltage higher than the specified voltage that is sufficient for their operation, they explode or get damaged. However, electrical systems protected by a surge arrester are not damaged because the terminator ensures that the high voltage does not enter the electrical system.
